Pafos Press 15 January 2024
The arrival of 2024 brings us the first double election contest. On June 9, citizens will be invited to vote for the nomination of MEPs and Representatives of Local Authorities.
The double election contest has many peculiarities and creates many questions among the voters.
The Local Government Reform was passed by the House of Representatives in March 2022. The implementation will come into force immediately after the Municipal elections.
Specifically, 20 new municipalities were created from mergers of previous municipalities and communities, as well as 28 clusters of communities.
What's changing this year?
Due to the volume of ballots and the additional polling stations that will be operating, it is understood that much more staff will be needed than in previous elections.
Each voter has the right to choose which votes to participate in. For example, he can vote for Mayor but not vote for any Deputy Mayor.
The planning at this stage seems to lead us to a ballot box for both the European Parliament and municipal elections. Each ballot is expected to have a different colour so that it is easier to vote and, by extension, to count them.
What will we vote for?
Each Municipality voter will be given six ballots for Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Regional Governor, MEPs, municipal Councillors and for the Members of the school board.
The voters of the Community complexes will vote for the Mayor, Regional Mayor, Members of Community Councils and MEPs. The President and the Deputy President of the Service Cluster Council will be voted by the Community Elders of the cluster at the first meeting after their election.
Specifically, within one day Cypriot citizens are invited to elect:
- Mayors
- Deputy mayors
- Municipal Councillors
- Community leaders
- Members of Community Councils
- Presidents of Provincial Self-Government Organizations
- Members of School Boards (for municipalities)
- MEPs
