The Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow warning for severe weather phenomena that are expected to affect Cyprus today.
The warning will go into effect at 12:00 noon on Thursday and will be in effect until 2:00 a.m. on Friday.
During its validity, isolated strong storms are expected to initially affect the western half of the island and progressively the rest of the areas.
The weather in detail:
Weak low pressure prevails in the area, however low pressure is expected to affect the island from midday onwards.
Today the weather will be mostly cloudy while isolated rains are gradually expected from the west. However, the phenomena are expected to intensify and extend to the rest of the island from the afternoon onwards, giving local rains and storms. Hail may also fall in a storm. The winds will initially blow northeast to southeast moderate to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort, to become southeast to south, of the same intensity, in the afternoon. The sea will be slightly rough to rough. The temperature will rise to around 19 degrees in the interior, around 20 on the coasts and around 9 degrees in the higher mountains.
Tonight the weather will be mostly cloudy with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms expected. In a storm, hail is also possible, while snow or sleet can fall on the highest peaks of Troodos. The winds will blow mainly south-west to north-west weak to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort, and on the leeward coast moderate, 4 Beaufort. The sea will generally be rough. The temperature will drop to around 8 degrees inland, around 13 on the south and east coasts, around 15 on the west and north coasts and around 4 degrees in the higher mountains.
On Friday, the weather will continue to be mainly cloudy at times, while localized showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected, especially in coastal areas. On the highest peaks of Troodos it is possible that snow or sleet will fall. On Saturday, the weather will initially be partly cloudy and at times locally cloudy, while isolated rains are expected locally. Gradually the weather will improve.
On Sunday, Christmas Eve, the weather will be mostly clear.
The temperature on Friday will remain at the same levels as Thursday, while the weekend will see a rise, to continue to fluctuate above the average climatic values for the season.
