INVESTIGATIONS BEGIN TO LOCATE THE DIVER IN 'ZENOBIA' [Update - body found]

Filenews 27 October 2023 - by Natasha Christoforou

Hours of searching for a 66-year-old British diver, a permanent resident of Cyprus, whose traces were lost on Thursday morning at the Zenobia shipwreck, proved fruitless.

The search began today at the first light of day by divers, boats and aerial means.

The 66-year-old, who is a diving instructor, along with a group of divers dived in pairs yesterday morning in the Gulf of Larnaka, in order to visit the Zenobia shipwreck. Around 10:00 a.m., the diver with whom the 66-year-old, who was disoriented, dived, reported losing track. He said the last time he saw him was in Zenobia's engine room, located at a depth of 42 meters.

The JRCC was immediately informed, while amateur divers rushed to the area and began searching the Zenobia shipwreck, but to no avail. The JRCC immediately activated the National Search and Rescue Plan NEARCHOS, mobilizing a helicopter, floating means of the Port and Maritime Police, teams of divers of the Republic of Cyprus R & D System, as well as volunteer rescue teams.

Although the search extended beyond the wreck, it was not possible to locate the diver. Investigations today will focus on the wreck carcass and beyond. The diver, who was with the 66-year-old, was taken to hospital as a precaution.

UPDATE - Unfortunately the body of the diver has now been found.
