The Cybercrime Sub-Directorate informs the public about a new type of fraud, which is on the rise and concerns misleading messages about alleged cancellation of a reservation in tourist accommodation and hotel units.
In particular, citizens who made reservations of hotels and tourist accommodation through websites offering such services, receive misleading messages that their reservation will be cancelled due to non-fulfilment of their payment.
Citizens are asked to pay for their reservation through a suspicious electronic link, resulting in either double charging or having their bank card details stolen and used illegally.
The public is asked to be particularly careful and not to respond to such messages.
In case of receiving such a message, contact directly with the contact details of the hotel unit in which the reservation was made and not in response to the same message through the booking platform.
In case of activation of the link and declaration of the bank card details, it is recommended to contact the bank immediately and cancel the card.
Particular importance should also be taken by hotel units to take relevant precautions, which are called to be particularly careful in any suspicious messages and requests that include links from their customers.
