Pafos LIve 20 August 2023
A guided tour of the oldest lighthouse in Cyprus, the lighthouse of Pafos, was organized today by the Cyprus Ports Authority, as part of its social contribution and celebrations for the 50 years since its establishment, operation, and contribution to the port events of the country.
Present at the morning tours was the chairman of the board of directors of the Port Authority Dr. Antonis Stylianou who reminded that the third Sunday of August has been designated as World Lighthouse Day.
On this occasion, the Port Authority in cooperation with the Department of Antiquities, he said, organized today four guided tours of local and foreign travellers to perhaps the most emblematic lighthouse of Cyprus, the lighthouse of Pafos, located within the archaeological park of the city.
Despite the evolution of technology, lighthouses still play an important role in maritime safety today. Apart from the safety of navigation, the country's lighthouse network is now also the cultural heritage of the island, noted the tour guide Eva Chrysanthou, who analyzed to visitors the history of the lighthouses of Cyprus.
The Lighthouse of Pafos was erected during the British occupation in 1888 and is the oldest in operation. A total of eight lighthouses operate in Cyprus and the most modern one has been erected at the westernmost tip of Cyprus, on the hill above Cape Arnaoutis of Akamas. It is the only one that is metal and has been operating since 1989.
