Pafos Live 8 May 2023
Following the intervention of BirdLife Cyprus, the Department of Environment, in a written letter, has asked the District Officer of Pafos and the Department of Town Planning to take the necessary steps so that the works started for the construction of the photovoltaic parks in the area of Anarita are terminated.
The intervention concerns work within the breeding season of birds. The association informed that the two large photovoltaic parks in Anarita have received approval from the Environmental Authority, provided that no construction works will be carried out during the main breeding season of birds, i.e. from March to July, to avoid disturbance to the species. For a month now, However, as he complains, in the area where these two parks will be built, in the midst of spring migration and the breeding season of birds, work has begun and continues.
Renewable energy sources are a big part of the solution to the climate crisis and Cyprus has so many sunny days that it is impossible not to support renewables and especially a "solar future" for Cyprus. "As long as this is done carefully, with respect for nature and biodiversity and as efficiently as possible. For these reasons, we believe and support that priority should be given to roofs of government buildings, industrial areas, abandoned landfills and other such sites, rather than natural areas of value for biodiversity.
And when that happens, what we at least expect is that environmental conditions will be respected.
