EVACUATIONS FROM SUDAN VIA LARNACA CONTINUE

Operations to evacuate Sudanese citizens via Cyprus are not stopping and Cypriot authorities have already accepted a request from Australia to evacuate its nationals through Larnaka airport.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Theodoros Gotsis told CNA that the British would try to continue their operations until Tuesday.

So far, 2,200 people have been evacuated and 1,800 have already left for the UK. A flight departs within the day.

Gotsis said there had been a request from Australia, which was accepted, to evacuate its nationals from Sudan. A military plane is expected to arrive at Larnaka airport carrying civilians, he added.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman said that the Cypriot authorities remain ready and the ESTIA plan is in place to assist foreign countries in evacuating their citizens.

He also mentioned that 2 family members of a person of Cypriot origin, who were traveling by road to Egypt, have already arrived in the country and are under the responsibility of the Cypriot embassy in Cairo.

According to British media, a total of 1,888 citizens were transported from Wadi Saeedna airport outside the capital Khartoum to Larnaka.

The vast majority of them were British nationals and members of their families. Some doctors working in the NHS who do not hold a British passport were also removed.

According to the Foreign Office, it was the largest evacuation operation by Sudan of any Western country.
