A 54-year-old woman ended up in hospital after being attacked by a 30-year-old man who broke into and attempted to rob her home.

According to the Police, at around 23:15 last night, information was received that a 54-year-old woman noticed inside her residence in Limassol, an unknown man, who had his face covered with a hood. The suspect attacked the 54-year-old by punching her in the face, repeatedly shouting the word "money" at her. After the 54-year-old began shouting, the attacker fled.

Members of the Police rushed to the scene for examinations, but also to the wider area to locate the perpetrator. Following a tip-off, a 30-year-old man wasspotted in the yard of a second house located in the area, and was checked by members of the Emergency Response Squad, who had rushed to the scene. In the possession of the 30-year-old, the sum of 2,960 euros, a folding knife type knife, five and a half centimeters long, a screwdriver and three keys were found in a waist bag. He was also found in possession of 12 firecrackers and a quantity of green dry cannabis plant matter, with a gross weight of five and a half grams.

The 30-year-old suspect was arrested for the offences of unlawful possession of property, possession of burglary tools, possession of explosives, and stabbing. From tests carried out subsequently by members of the ICF of Limassol, stains believed to be blood stains were found on his clothes. Their identification is expected to be done through laboratory tests.

During searches in the area, on the route between the house where the suspect entered and attacked the 54-year-old woman and where the 30-year-old suspect was located, a hood was found, which was taken for laboratory tests.

The 54-year-old was taken by ambulance to Limassol General Hospital, where medical tests revealed that she had apest arachnoid hematoma in the brain and a fractured nasal bone. She is being treated at the General Hospital, with her health condition, according to the attending physicians, being out of danger.

The exams are continued by the ICF of Limassol.

At around 9.15 last night, during a patrol, members of the Limassol OPE approached for inspection a car that was at the end of the road in the Limassol area, with the driver of the car, after noticing the members of the Police, turning off the headlights of his vehicle and trying to escape.

After members of the Police stopped the vehicle at the scene, it was found that there were two persons, men aged 39 and 31, with the 39-year-old being the driver of the vehicle. During the search of the two suspects, ten rolls of copper cables, a piece of copper cable, and five transformers of household electrical installations were found in their vehicle. A pair of gloves, a plastic pipe cutting scissors, a blade cutter, scissors and a hand lantern were also found.

After the two suspects did not give satisfactory explanations for the possession of the found, they were arrested for the offence of illegal possession of property, while after the subsequent search of their vehicle, two bags containing a small amount of white crystalline substance, believed to be methamphetamine, and a package containing a small amount of green dry cannabis plant matter, were found in a case in the driver's seat.

Police on Monday are investigating two case of arson in Nicosia schools.

According to police statement, the arsons happened around 5 am when police received a call about a fire at a high schools. Police arrived at the scene to find fires in four rooms and damages to school equipment.

In a second case, around 6:30 in the morning, police were called to a fire in a school hall, also in Nicosia.

Upon examining the scene, police and the fire service found that the music room and the equipment it contained had been completely destroyed.

Additionally, extensive damage was caused to the school’s canteen by an improvised explosive placed outside the door, while three other rooms were also damaged, possibly from the shock wave caused.

Malicious damage was also caused to the main entrance of the school and its multipurpose hall.

The Nicosia CID is examining evidence taken from the two scenes.
