TWO PERSONS IN PRISON FOR AIDING A THIRD-COUNTRY NATIONAL

Prison sentences were imposed on two persons, men aged 37 and 35, following a trial of a case of aiding a third-country national to reside in the Republic, concerning the arrival by sea boat of a number of migrants, in the area of free Famagusta, in September, 2022.

Specifically, on September 11, 14 persons, third-country nationals, including the 37-year-old and 35-year-old, arrived by sea boat in the famagusta district. Following evidence obtained during the examinations by members of the Police, the 37-year-old and the 35-year-old were arrested on the basis of court warrants, including for the offences of conspiracy to commit a felony, aiding a third-country national to enter the Republic for profit, and transporting persons by water in an unsafe or overloaded vessel.

According to the Police, at the end of the police examinations, the Police proceeded to the immediate registration of the case for trial by the Permanent Assize Court of Larnaca – Famagusta. After the Permanent Assize Court, assessing the witness material presented before it by the Prosecutor's Office, found the 37-year-old and 35-year-old guilty, yesterday morning it imposed a two-year prison sentence on the 37-year-old and the 35-year-old a sentence of one and a half years in prison.

The case had been investigated by the Famagusta ICF.
