In an incredible way he managed to extort money from a 49-year-old from the free area of Famagusta, a 69-year-old Greek, who was arrested with the assistance of the Greek authorities and extradited to Cyprus. The 69-year-old allegedly pretended to be dying in an online communication he had with the 49-year-old and persuaded him to send him thousands of euros, supposedly to arrange the transfer of  €250,000, which he would give him as a gift.

The fraud was reported to the Famagusta ICF in May 2021 by the 49-year-old. As he mentioned, between January and April of the same year, after an online communication he had with an unknown person, he was persuaded to send him a sum of money amounting to €8,115, through remittances to three accounts in banks in Greece. The unknown man had told him that he would soon die and chose to donate the sum of €250,000 to him, as long as he sent him some money for tax payments and bank expenses.

The 69-year-old was wanted by the Republic authorities, who issued a European arrest warrant against him, following evidence that emerged during the investigation of the case. On January 23, he was arrested by the Greek authorities and after a court procedure, the request for his extradition to Cyprus was approved.

The Greek, who is suspected of internet fraud, securing money by false representations and money laundering, was brought before the Famagusta Court in Paralimni yesterday, which ordered his detention for 24 hours. The Police will register a case against him within the day.
