 Filenews 13 January 2023

An important visit to Great Britain is made by the President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades during which he will have a meeting next Monday with King Charles III.

According to the Director of the Office of the President of the Republic, Andreas Iosif, during the meeting, President Anastasiades will brief King Charles III on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem and Turkey's provocations in the Eastern Mediterranean. Bilateral relations between Cyprus and the United Kingdom will also be on the agenda of the meeting.

Climate change is also expected to be discussed as well as the consequences of the energy crisis due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The meeting will take place at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, at 10:30 a.m., UK time. It is the 1st meeting of President Anastasiades with King Charles III, after his proclamation as King of Great Britain last September, following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

It is recalled that last Wednesday, January 11, President Anastasiades received at the Presidential Palace Princess Anne who paid a visit to Cyprus, in order to inspect the British contingent at UNFICYP.

Tomorrow evening the President of the Republic will attend a Gala Dinner on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus during which President Anastasiades will be honoured by the United Kingdom Federation of Cypriots and the Intergroup on Cyprus in the British Parliament.

The event was scheduled twice in the past but was postponed due to the pandemic and the death of Queen Elizabeth.

The event will be attended by a representative of the British Government and members of the British Parliament. It is expected to highlight the significant contribution of Cypriot expatriates to the strengthening of bilateral relations between Cyprus and the United Kingdom as well as to the promotion of our national issue.
