The provinces where the capitals of the Member States of the European Union are located tend to have younger populations, with the average median age of all EU regions being at 44.1 years in 2021, recording an increase compared to 2020 when it was at 43.9 years, according to data released by Eurostat, the EU's statistical office.
In Cyprus, which is among the countries recorded in Eurostat data as a province, the median age of the inhabitants is at 38 years, below the average of the median ages of the EU provinces.
Based on Eurostat's statistical projections, the median age in Cyprus is expected to increase to 39.7 years in 2030, to 42 years in 2040 and to 43.2 years in 2050.
Among eu regions, the lowest median age was recorded in the French overseas areas of Mayotte (17.7 years) and French Guiana (26.3 years).
Eight EU regions recorded a median age of at least 50 years in 2021. These are the German regions of Chemnitz, Saxony - Anhalt, Mecklenburg - Western Pomerania, Brandenburg and Thurilla, the Italian regions of Liguria and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and the Spanish region of Asturias in Spain.
According to statistical projections, in 2050 the highest median age at NUTS2 provincial level is expected in the Spanish regions of Asturias (59.1 years) and Castile and León (57.9 years). The lowest medians are expected to be recorded in Mayotte (21.1 years) and French Guiana (30.6 years).
