POLICING THE CENTRE OF PAPHOS - PROPOSAL SUBMITTED

 Filenews 14 October 2022

The nature of the development observed in the last two years in the city centre also highlights new needs in terms of policing and control for maintaining order. This is pointed out by the municipal councillor of EDEK in the Municipality of Paphos, Panagiotis Vorkas, emphasizing that the uses that concern the majority of restaurants, bars and generally uses that attract patrons mainly in the evening hours, make it necessary to have on a daily basis some form of policing.

"The picture of development and active nightlife is clearly attractive and encouraging after the many years of decline and decline of this area," he says. "However, the burden on the area due to the daily existence of thousands of patrons throughout the area of the centre seems to sometimes lead to delinquent behaviours. This puts at risk both the people who visit the area and the private properties and shops, and even the urban equipment infrastructure that the Municipal Authority has installed. Urban equipment and private shops have unfortunately already become the target of vandalism in some cases."

It is for this reason, emphasizes Mr. Vorkas, who proposes to the Municipal Council of Paphos to urgently examine the possibility of adopting a permanent presence of executives of the Traffic Police Department of the Municipality or buying services for the installation of patrols by a private security company.

"In addition, the issue of policing should be discussed with the Paphos police department so that it can be handled jointly with the Municipal Authority. An indicative move could be the revival of the institution of the neighbourhood police officer, targeted for the downtown area.

The establishment of conditions of control and the cultivation of a sense of security in the center of our city, is a key element for maintaining the development that is evolving and avoiding erosion of the image that the area presents today".

The Panagiotis Vorkas proposal, which has been submitted in public for a week now, is already widely accepted in civil society, but also among market professionals who believe that it will constitute an upgrade of the product.
