TURKEY - MAP WITH 'MILITARISED ISLANDS'

 Filenews 20 June 2022

With yet another provocative map, the Turkish Anadolu Agency supports Ankara's positions that Greece is "violating" the provisions of the Treaties of Lausanne and Paris for the Greek islands, which, as Turkey argues, should not have an army.

The propaganda map

On the map the Turks have now included along with Lesvos, Lemnos, Rhodes and Thassos, but also many more islands. "The fact that the islands are so close to the coast of Anatolia is the main reason for the civilian status of the islands. The threat that the islands may pose to Turkey's security due to their location has been taken into account in the Treaties," the publication notes.

At this point, let us recall the statements of the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Çavuşoğlu, that if Greece does not withdraw its army from these islands, Turkey will challenge their sovereignty.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs does not miss an opportunity for provocation and has directly raised the issue of questioning the sovereignty of Greek islands, which are militarized. "the status of the islands will be discussed if the Greeks do not give up the violations," the head of Turkish diplomacy reiterates.

And Erdogan continues the... 'noise'

At the same time, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, according to a Sabah report, is preparing to publish at the upcoming NATO Summit alleged documents collected by Ankara that "show that Greece is violating the treaties of Lausanne and Paris".

The newspaper's report titled "Landing with documents at the NATO Summit" specifically states that the Turkish president will denounce Greece before all Alliance members for the militarization of the islands, and the visits of senior officials to them.

In particular, Sabah refers to "provocative visits by the Deputy Minister of Defence of Greece", stressing that they should not take place.
