INCREASED POLICE PRESENCE DUE TO HOLIDAY WEEKEND - AND TIPS FOR SECURITY

 Filenews 10 June 2022

In view of the three-day flood (Saturday 11/06/2022–Monday 13/06/2022), the Police will once again take particularly increased measures, with priority given to the protection and safety of citizens.

In this context, the Police is intensifying its action, aiming at the safety of movements on the road network and the protection of citizens and their property.

Traffic Police Measures

Due to the increased traffic that is expected to be observed on the motorways and the main roads leading to the coasts and the mountains, the Police will take additional measures to prevent road accidents, reduce traffic and provide all possible assistance to road users. Therefore, the Traffic Police Headquarters, as well as the District Traffic Departments, will be on the ground.

With a view to ensuring a bloodless three-day period away from road accidents and injuries, particular emphasis will be placed on offences that are proven to contribute to fatal and serious road collisions, such as speeding, dangerous overtaking, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure to wear a seat belt or safety helmet. In addition, next Monday, on the day of the flood celebration and especially in the afternoon, additional preventive measures will be taken when the public returns from the coastal cities to the capital.

In this context, the Police once again appeals to drivers to be particularly careful and to comply with traffic signals and the instructions of police officers on duty. Also, drivers are encouraged to park their vehicles in the designated parking areas to avoid obstruction of the Traffic Police. Finally, it is reminded that parking in parking spaces for people with disabilities to non-beneficiaries is prohibited. Where violations are detected, they will be subject to the consequences of the Law.

Crime prevention

Three day holidays such as that of the Flood are considered periods of high risk for burglaries and thefts, since the cunning take advantage of the absence of the occupants who depart for vacation. That is why the Police are taking additional measures to prevent crime and especially offences against property, such as burglaries, thefts, robberies, etc., with pedestrian and motorized patrols, in the cities, but also in the countryside.

Apart from the measures of the Police, however, the attention of the public is drawn to take preventive measures to guard their property before leaving their home, as well as at the place of their vacation.

On the beach the public is urged

  • To carry only the necessary amount of money and avoid carrying high-value items, such as jewellery, watches, cameras, mobile phones, etc.
  • In case such items are transported, in no case should they be left unattended, while where possible, cooperation with other bathers for the mutual monitoring of their property is essential.

At the hotel or tourist apartment

  • Every time the occupants depart from their room, make sure that the windows and doors are closed and secured.
  • Do not carry with them money or valuables that they will not need at the time of their exit.
  • Valuables can be left for safekeeping, in the reception area or in another specially designed area of the hotel or accommodation.

Homeowners

  • When they are absent from home, do not leave clues that betray their absence.
  • To cooperate with trusted neighbours, for the mutual surveillance of their homes.
  • Do not leave the keys in the locks, nor even on the inner side of the door.
  • Do not leave exposed, money, jewellery, important documents or other valuables and where possible, keep them in a safe.
  • Make sure they have secured doors, windows and utilised lights.
  • If they have an alarm system and/or a closed circuit television, make sure that they have put them into operation and that they have not been damaged.

Shop owners

  • To leave open and without content the cash registers of their stores
  • Do not leave large amounts of money in insecure places
  • Do not leave their property exposed
  • Ensure all windows and doors are securely locked
  • Check that these systems are modern, reliable and have not been damaged any

In crowded places/public roads:

  • The public is urged to be especially careful when walking or being on busy streets/public places.
  • Money and credit cards to be placed in the front pockets of clothes.
  • For women carrying bags, do not put in them all the money, credit cards, passports, etc. What will not be needed on your way out, it is preferable to leave in an insured place in the hotel or in the place of stay.
  • The bag, in which valuables are located, is preferable to be placed in such a way that there is constant visual contact with it. (e.g. across the chest).

Fire prevention

As far as fires are concerned, in cooperation with the Fire Brigade, it is announced that the Police will take strict measures to prevent them. The Police warns that they will be strict regarding the offenders and persons, who deliberately carry out the lighting of a fire in the countryside and stresses once again that non-compliance with the relevant Legislation is an offence.

In general, the public is urged to be alert and to cooperate closely with the Police and, if necessary, to immediately inform the Police or to communicate with the Citizen's Hotline at 1460.
