 Filenews 30 May 2022

Within 52 days, only 10% of taxpayers have submitted their employee and self-employed income returns for the 2021 tax year.

Specifically, from the beginning of April until today, 28,000 taxpayers out of the 280,000, who have an obligation to do so, have submitted their tax returns.

According to data from the Tax Department, they have processed the income statements of 35,000  taxpayers (31,500 employees and 3,500 self-employed. Of the total taxpayers 28,000 have proceeded to the final submission of tax returns and 7,000 persons have processed their return and placed it in temporary receipt. The last date for the submission of tax returns and the payment of the tax and charges due is July 31, 2022.

In fact, those taxpayers who submit their tax returns from August 1st onwards will be subject to an administrative fine of €100. Speaking to "F" on behalf of the Department of Taxation, Sotiris Markides, called on the public to proceed with the timely submission of their tax returns and the payment of taxes (income tax, GHS, special defence contribution) that may arise. As in previous years, taxpayers who last year had mixed incomes of up to €19,500 are obliged to submit tax returns.

Very fast company statements

In addition, taxpayers will have ten months to submit their corporate and self-employed income returns with accounts for the 2021 tax year. Last Thursday, the filing of these tax returns began and is expected to be completed on March 31, 2023. Mr. Markidis said that within the framework of the modernization of the Department and the effort made to provide all the necessary tools to taxpayers to comply in time with their tax obligations, the Department managed to post so soon in the TAXISnet system, the company income statements (TF4) and self-employed with accounts (TF1 Account) He also said that the timely posting of these tax returns is a result of the intensive efforts made by the Department. He stressed that taxpayers will have enough time to comply with their tax obligations. At the same time, Mr. Markides called on taxpayers and their representatives to use the 10-month period provided to them for the timely submission of returns.

The changes for legal persons

Meanwhile, following a recent amendment of the law, the submission of the income statements of a company and a self-employed person with accounts for the tax year 2020 is also in progress, with a deadline of July 31, 2022. So far, about 50,000 have definitively submitted company statements while about 600 are in temporary receipt. As noted by Mr. Markidis, the aim of the Department of Taxation is to adhere to the timetables and deadlines, as provided by law, as well as to avoid extensions, in order to achieve high levels of tax compliance. "We once again urge taxpayers to proceed with the completion and final submission of their return as soon as possible," he concluded.
