DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS RAMPANT IN CYPRUS

Filenews 30 May 2022 - by Ioanna Mantzipa

Domestic violence continues to gallop in Cyprus, with the numbers of complaints remaining for the first five months of 2022 at the same high levels of the same period last year. These are complaints that are recorded daily in the special investigation team of cases and reports of violence in the family of the Limassol Police Directorate, with investigators making arrests of persons and registrations of cases before the Court. However, some of these cases are never completed, since the complainants are asking to withdraw.

Behind the closed doors of the Courts are recorded various incidents involving violence, attacks and threats with victims most of the time being women, partners or even spouses.

In his statements to "F", the spokesman of the Limassol Police Directorate and head of the ICF, Lefteris Kyriacou, said that from the beginning of the year until today, 280 reports of incidents of violence in the family have been made in the special investigation team for cases and reports of violence, of which 112 were registered in the crime register. Of these cases, 82 were registered before the Limassol District Court, while the special team in these 5 months proceeded to 69 arrests of persons. In addition, 73 decrees were issued to exclude or remove victims from their homes.

The head of the Limassol ICF also added that about 50 cases were transferred to the Legal Service where instructions were given by the Attorney General for their further handling.

Compared to last year and the statistics, of the 117 cases registered in the second half of 2021, 31 of them were eventually withdrawn. As Mr Kyriacou explained, this is a large percentage that reaches about 27% - 28%.
