In a direct trial before the Assize Court that will meet today in Paphos, the 74-year-old British permanent resident of Cyprus was indicted for the murder of his wife in Tremithousa, Paphos.
The confessed perpetrator was discharged from the psychiatric institution of Athalassa where he was initially hospitalized at the suggestion of a state psychiatrist and has already appeared before the District Court of Pafos where it was decided to refer him to the Assize Court. From then until today's procedure, the elderly man remains in custody.
The 74-year-old, in a case that shook the community, on the evening of Saturday, December 18, confessed to killing his 75-year-old wife at their home in Tremithousa, citing her own desire to redeem her from the suffering caused by her incurable illness. He then attempted to kill himself by taking more than 100 pills, but the timely intervention of the Police resulted in the doctors at Paphos Hospital preventing the fatality.
After his arrest, the 74-year-old confessed to committing the murder against his 75-year-old wife by blocking her nose and mouth with his hands. During the autopsy at the scene the same night, coroner Nikolas Charalambous found that the 75-year-old had bruises and abrasions on her face and, according to official data, her death was due to a criminal act.
The autopsy performed on the body of the 75-year-old did not establish the causes of death and now the results of histopathological and toxicological tests are awaited.
The Court has set the case to open the proceedings on 18 April 2022.
