An end to the pro of land subsidence in the community of Pissouri will be given by the construction works that began last week to be carried out in the area of "Lakes Pissouri". For years the ground has been receding, making more than 20 houses unsuitable to date.
Speaking to "F", the commune of Pissouri, Lazaros Lazarou, said that the machines of the company Cybarco, which was handling the project, have been transferred to the area and the construction works for the implementation of the first phase of the project concerning the construction have already begun. In fact, excavations in some places are expected to reach a depth of up to 39 meters where the stabilization of the soil will be attempted.
The cost for the construction works of phase A exceeds €8 million and the works will last for about six months. During the same period of time, the second phase is expected to start, which will include embankments, works for the construction of rainwater runoff and the construction of a sewerage system. The project is expected to be completed at the end of 2023 and the total cost will be €33 million.
As the commune explained, until today, by eviction order, more than 20 owners have abandoned their homes. "There are constantly homes that are showing problems and damages, which unfortunately are growing day by day," he said. Among other things, Mr. Lazarou expressed optimism that with the first piling constructions, within the next three months, these will stop the problem of soil retreat. He also said that the landslides worsen at certain times when the area receives enough rainfall, stressing that officials have known for years the geological problem of this area.
Asked whether residents will return back to the area and their homes, he noted that "it will take time to restore confidence in rebuilding the houses. We believe that residents who can repair their homes will return." He concluded by saying that they are waiting for the construction work to be completed and then they will see with the relevant ministry and the issue of supporting the people who lost their homes for good.
