1,971 NEW CASES, SIX DEATHS - Sunday 16 January

The Ministry of Health announces that today, January 16, 2022, 6 people have died from COVID-19, while 1,971 (positivity rate: 2.07%) are the new cases of the disease.

Specifically:

  • 6 people have died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 681.
  • 270 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 92 are in serious condition. 71.38% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.
  • 17 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases), continue to be hospitalized intubated in a serious condition due to COVID in an Intensive Care Unit.
  • A total of 95,005 tests have been performed to detect the disease using the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.
  • 1,971 (positivity rate: 2.07%) new cases of COVID-19 were identified by molecular tests (PCR) and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 225,738.

Today's results are detailed.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 6 people who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19, concern:

- Woman, aged 90 years, who died on January 16th at the Limassol General Hospital.

- A man, aged 82, who died on January 16th at the Limassol General Hospital.

- Woman, aged 82 years, who died on January 16 at Famagusta General Hospital

- A man, aged 87, who died on January 16th at Nicosia General Hospital.

- Woman, aged 87, who died on January 16th at Nicosia General Hospital.

- Woman, aged 80 years, who ended up on January 16th in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 is 681, of which:

  • 427 men (62.7%), and
  • 254 women (37.3%).

The average age of those voted by the disease is 76 years.

B. Hospitalized:

In total, 270 covid-19 patients are hospitalized in the hospitals of the CySEC, of which 92 are in serious condition or in MAF conditions.

Of the 92 patients who are in serious condition, 31 are intubated, 6 are hospitalized in an off-ventilator Intensive Care Unit and 55 in an Increased Care Unit.

C. Positive cases of COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):

Of the 95,005 diagnoses performed, 5,589 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 89,416 by the antigen rapid test, 1,971 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting as follows:

  • 36 cases from 550 samples taken through the process of contact tracing of already confirmed cases.
  • 54 cases from 2,806 samples taken in the context of passenger screening at Larnaka and Paphos Airports.
  • 181 cases from 1,833 samples taken through a private initiative.
  • 4 cases from 163 samples taken from the Microbiology Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 763 cases from 37,217 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  • 927 cases from 52,199 samples tested by the antigen rapid test method through the Ministry of Health's programme.
  • 6 cases from 237 samples taken in the framework of the referral program by Personal Physicians and control of special teams through the Public Health Clinics.
