978 NEW CASES, ONE DEATH - Thursday

The Ministry of Health announces that today, December 23, 2021, an 81-year-old man has died from COVID-19, while 978 are the new positive cases of the disease.

Specifically:

• 1 person died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 625.
• 162 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 66 are in serious condition. 77.78% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.
• 13 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases), continue to be hospitalized intubated in a serious condition due to COVID in an Intensive Care Unit.
• A total of 93,233 tests have been performed to detect the disease using the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.
• 978 (positivity rate: 1.05% new cases of COVID-19 were identified by molecular tests (PCR) and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 148,663.

Today's results are detailed.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 1 person who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19, concerns:

- A man, aged 81, who died on December 22nd in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 is 625, of which:

• 399 men (63.8%), and
• 226 women (36.2%).

The average age of those voted by the disease is 75.9 years.

B. Hospitalized:

In total, 162 covid-19 patients are hospitalized in the hospitals of the CySEC, of which 66 are in serious condition or in MAF conditions.

Of the 66 patients who are in serious condition, 25 are intubated, 4 are hospitalized in an off-ventilator Intensive Care Unit and 37 are in an Increased Care Unit.

C. Positive cases of COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):

Of the 93,233 diagnoses performed, 12,269 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 80,964 by the antigen rapid test method, 978 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting as follows:

• 178 cases from 1,986 samples taken through the process of contact tracing of already confirmed cases.
• 44 cases from 6,285 samples taken in the context of passenger screening at Larnaka and Paphos Airports.
• 148 cases from 3,574 samples taken through private initiative.
• 20 cases from 381 samples taken from the Microbiology Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
• 408 cases from 54,626 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
• 180 cases from 26,338 samples tested by the antigen rapid test method through the Ministry of Health's programme.

In addition, the following tests were carried out, without the detection of a case:

• 0 cases from 42 samples taken in the framework of the referral program by Personal Doctors and control of special teams through the Public Health Clinics.
• 0 cases from 1 sample taken as part of checks in closed facilities.
