Faster spread of COVID-19 now in Central Europe, following the increase in cases in Eastern Europe, reflects the epidemiological map of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) released on Thursday.
Cyprus for another week remains in the red category of countries.
However, the areas in the "deep red" category that were recorded in only some countries, now include a significant part of Germany, as well as a large part of Greece, Hungary and the Netherlands.
In particular, in the "deep red" category, the category of greater spread, are located in their largest extent or in full the Republic of Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, the Baltic states, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Greece.
In the red are Germany (with the southeast of the country being in the deep red), Poland (the east of the country is in the deep red), Finland, Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Cyprus.
In the orange category, i.e. in better condition, they remain France, Spain, Portugal and Italy, with areas of greater infection in Italy, Spain and France, but also safe areas (green category) in Italy and Spain.
The only country that is in the green category for another week is Malta.
An orange zone is defined as countries or regions where the total number of new cases in the previous 14 days is between less than 50 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants, and the rate of positive tests exceeds 4%, or where the total number of new cases is between 50 and 75 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants and the rate of positive tests exceeds 1%, or where the total number of new cases is between 75 and of 200 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants and the rate of positive tests is less than 4%.
The red zone is defined as the countries or regions where the total number of new cases in the previous 14 days is between 75 and 200 per 100 thousand inhabitants, and the percentage of positive tests exceeds 4%, and if the number of new cases is below 500 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants (in which case the country passes to the "deep red" category).
The map and related data are made public by the ECDC every Thursday, supporting the efforts made on the basis of a relevant recommendation by the Council of the EU to coordinate restrictions on free movement due to the pandemic. The maps are based on the latest data found in the database sent by member states to the European Surveillance System (TESSy) by midnight on Tuesday.
