The construction and operation of a composting – composting plant for the dehydrated sludge of the Paralimni – Ayia Napa wastewater treatment plant and pre-selected organic remains of hotels-restaurants is planned by the Consortium of Sewerage Boards of Paralimni and Ayia Napa. The proposed project will have a processing capacity of 10,000 tons of sludge/year or 43 tons/day during the peak season and an additional 20–25 tons of organic residues/day also during the peak season (<75 tons/day).
The estimated cost of the project is €6.5 million. for mud installations and another €6 million. for organic residues. The project is expected to be completed within 18 months of the start of the works.
The proposed composting – composting plant is to be built within the area leased for the Paralimni – Ayia Napa Wastewater Treatment Plant. The area that will occupy the installation area of the plant amounts to a total of 29,600 m2.
The proposed composting and composting plants of sludge, as well as organic residues (at a later stage), will occupy a total area of 17,696 m2 and will be ground floor. Specifically, they will include two identical buildings with a maximum height of 9m. North, west, intermediate and south of the two buildings there will be road construction for easier access and movement of vehicles. The space will be fenced. The entrance /exit of vehicles in /from the area will be from the west through the Wastewater Treatment Plant of Paralimni - Ayia Napa.
The information report submitted for study to the Environmental Authority describes in detail the process of composting – composting of dehydrated sludge and organic residues. Near the entrance of the facility will be placed a green shredding unit. The unit will include a mobile branch/pruning shredder that will produce shredded branches, which will be used as bulking materials in order to optimize the composting process. It is noted that there will always be stored a sufficient amount of material for the needs of the installation.
