BOOSTER VACCINE APPROVED FOR 60+ AND SPECIFIC VULNERABLE GROUPS

 Filenews 15 October 2021

The recommendation of the Minister of Health, Mr. Michalis Hadjipantelas, was approved today by the Council of Ministers, regarding the new population groups, which will be given priority for vaccination with a booster / 3rd dose of the vaccine against COVID-19. The purpose of the effort is to shield those groups of the population, whose immune response decreases, based on scientific evidence, over a certain period of time. As of October 14, 29,897 people were vaccinated with the 3rd dose.

Specifically, the Council of Ministers decided that priority should be given to the following population groups:

People aged 60 years and over: Vaccinations will be processed either at the free-to-go vaccination centres without arranging an appointment in advance or by arranging an appointment through the Vaccination Portal. The exact date for the start of vaccination of people 60 years and older will be announced in the coming days.

Vulnerable groups: Vaccinations will be processed in the Vaccination Centres that operate all over Cyprus, after arranging an appointment through telephone communication. The booster/3rd dose will be given to people, regardless of age, who fall into the following groups:

  • People with severe chronic respiratory disease
  • People with severe chronic heart and vascular disease
  • People with severe chronic kidney disease
  • People with severe chronic liver disease
  • People with severe chronic neurological disease
  • People with Diabetes Mellitus and other endocrine diseases
  • People with hemoglobinopathies.

It is recalled that the booster/3rd dose is administered with an mRNA technology vaccine (Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna) and provided that six (6) months have necessarily elapsed since their vaccination with the 2nd dose of the vaccine.

Further information follows regarding the above in due course.
