Almost 70 years since the devastating earthquake that hit the Pafos district and especially Stroumbi, sending 12 of its inhabitants to their deaths, the community honoured their memory this year. On Sunday, the memorial service for the 12 victims of the tragic earthquake of September 10, 1953, which literally demolished the village and sealed, tragically, the historical course of the community, whose presence dates back to the Neolithic Age, was held in the church of Agia Sophia in the community.
This year's commemoration event arose in the context of the activation of the Multidisciplinary Cultural Center of Stroumbi (PPC) and as a result of the recent publication of the book "Stroumbi-Memories of the earthquake of 1953" by Cleopatra Papageorgiou-Sofianou, in which testimonies have been recorded and narrations have been quoted by survivors of that devastating earthquake.
A trisagion followed in the Cemetery where a large commemorative plaque with the names of the deceased was placed. The expenses for the plaque were covered by the proceeds of the sale of the book.
In her speech, on behalf of the PSP, Mrs. Sofianou pointed out the necessity of establishing an annual memorial service in memory of the victims of the earthquake and the preservation of the memory for the younger generations.
