PAPHOS PORT - PROBLEMS DUE TO LACK OF LIGHTING AND ONGOING WORKS

Filenews 25 May 2021 - by Dora Christodoulou

The situation in the parking lot of Kato Paphos Archaeological Park due to the lack of lighting is unacceptable.

This is denounced by the operators of the port and the pier, on the occasion of the months, as they point out, the situation of the absence of any lighting in the area.

Entrepreneurs complain that with the reactivation of the focus and the start of a relatively satisfactory movement in recent times, the problem is revealed in all its dimensions, since as they say only in the last week there have been two incidents of elderly visitors who have been slightly injured by a fall and impact on an invisible obstacle as a result of the complete darkness that prevails within the parking lot.

"If someone doesn't have lighting from their mobile phone," a shopkeeper said at the entrance to the port's land area, "they are in immediate danger during the evening hours. This is a situation that causes fear for many migrants, since in this huge area there is literally not a single lamp lit these days".

The protesters are calling for these problems to be settled immediately, before starting next month, as expected, an increase in the movement of tourists and other visitors.

In addition to the problem of inadequate lighting in the evenings, the professionals of the region stress, the large-scale projects that began at the entrance of the archaeological park and the port of Kato Paphos, are not only not promoted at the pace that should be based on the importance of the area, but seem to be progressing at a turtle pace. Entrepreneurs complain that the reactivation of those businesses that have opened up creates new serious problems because of these projects and, above all, the pace of their promotion.

Professionals in the region point out that both the extent of the changes taking place at the entrance of the "heart" of tourism and the period of time they have begun create the need to promote work immediately and without the slightest delay.

"It is not understood that the entire tourism industry will be out of service for a whole year," they said, "and with its reactivation, albeit without a tourist current, it will be faced with such unexpected problems and delays. It is up to the Municipality of Paphos and the relevant state departments to move immediately and pressingly towards the contractor's side in order to immediately change the situation that has been consolidating in recent days."
