Paphos becomes the first city in Cyprus to establish a comprehensive system of intelligent parking, as well as intelligent monitoring of water supply within its municipal boundaries.
Following the award of the contract for the development of a specific geographical information system, in which smart parking infrastructures will be "uploaded", corresponding management will also be "up" for hydrometers, so that these processes can be monitored and recorded electronically and automatically. The new system concerns 3300 parking sensors, all organized parking spaces of the Municipality and 27,000 water meters of households and other premises.
The "smart" parking management system is an estimated cost of €1.2 million and has a duration of seven months. The project involves the management of parking spaces using sensors in each parking space in organized areas, as well as outdoors. There will be a mobile phone app through which the public will be informed about the available parking spaces at points of interest, as well as the payment of parking fees.
The implementation of the smart system will bring many great benefits, such as reducing unnecessary vehicle movements, facilitating the movement of citizens and visitors to the city, and reducing pollutants.
The development and maintenance of the Geographical Information System (GIS) will allow the Municipality of Paphos to geographically place the huge amount of data it collects on a daily basis, thus taking another essential step towards the realization of its strategic goal of transforming the city into a "Smart City".
