DECREASED MEDIAN AGE OF PEOPLE WHO ENDED UP WITH COVID-19

The median age of people who ended up with COVID-19 disease in 2021 was reduced to 77 years, from 82 years in 2020.

According to the latest national report, in December 2020 and January 2021 the highest number of deaths of people positive for COVID-19 has been recorded since the beginning of the pandemic, with the figure reaching 40% of the total number of deaths (85 and 86 deaths respectively). This is followed by April 2021 with 15% (n=63).

The data analysis period is March 2020 to May 2021. As of May 20, 2021, 420 deaths of people diagnosed with COVID-19 have been reported. 67% are for men (n=280 deaths) and the remaining 33% for women (n=140 deaths).

Of the 420 deaths, 350 (83%), had an underlying cause of COVID-19. 66% of the total number of deaths with the underlying cause of COVID-19 disease, concerns men (n=232 deaths) and the remaining 34% concern women (n=118 deaths).

The highest rate of deaths of people positive for COVID-19, with the underlying cause of death being COVID-19, concerns people with permanent residence in Limassol Province (n=127, 36%). 17%), Paphos Province (n=24.7%), Famagusta Province (n=14.4%), 4 deaths have Unspecified Province of Permanent Residence (1%). Limassol has the highest mortality rate per 100000 population (51.1 deaths per 100000 population). deaths per 100000 population and Nicosia with 34.6 deaths per 100000 population.

The objective of the EuroMOMO network (European monitoring of excess mortality) is to operate coordinated early monitoring of mortality and analyses in as many European countries as possible, using a standardised approach to ensure that data are comparable between countries, in times of pandemics and other infections that have an impact on public health e.g. influenza pandemic, heat waves. Cyprus has been a member of the EuroMOMO network since 28/10/2020. The network includes 29 countries. For Cyprus there is no excess mortality during the pandemic period (up to the 19th week of analysis of mortality data for the year 2021).
