PROTECTION MEASURES AGAINST THEFT, PARTICULARLY DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS

As part of the efforts made by the Police to improve the sense of security of citizens, as well as their property, in view of the summer holidays, the public is advised to take their own preventive measures.

For example, there are a number of preventive measures that citizens are encouraged to take to protect their homes and shops more effectively, as well as other property while they are on beaches and tourist resorts.

On the beach:

*To transfer only the necessary amount of money that the bather needs and his personal property to be constantly in his field of vision.
*Do not transport to the beach, high-value items such as jewellery, watches, cameras, mobile phones, etc. In case such items are transported, under no circumstances should they be left unattended.
*Where possible, cooperate with other bathers to maintain each other's property.

In the hotel or tourist apartment

*Prefer hotels or tourist accommodations, where there are measures to protect the property of the customers.
*Every time the occupants leave their room make sure that the windows and doors are closed and secured.
*Do not carry with them money or valuables that they will not need when leaving.
*Valuable items can be left for safekeeping, in the reception area or in another specially designed area of the hotel or accommodation.

Homeowners

*When they are away from home, leave no signs to betray their absence.
*Make sure they are well locked up and work with neighbours of their trust to keep their homes interconnected.
*Do not leave the keys on the locks, not even on the inside of the door.
*Do not leave exposed, money, jewellery, important documents or other valuables and where possible, keep them in a safe.
*Make sure they have secured doors, windows and lights.
*If they have an alarm system and/or CCTV, make sure that they have been put into service and that they have not been damaged.

Shop owners

*Leave open and without content the cash registers of their stores

*Do not leave large amounts of money in precarious places

*Do not leave their property exposed

*Have taken care of the installation of alarm systems

*Check that these systems are modern, reliable and have not been damaged As far as electrical appliances are concerned, record the serial numbers of the manufacturer

On busy places/public roads:

During their holidays, the public is encouraged to be particularly careful when walking or in busy
streets/public places and to follow the following instructions: *Money and credit cards are placed in the front pockets of clothes.
*For women carrying bags, do not place all the money, credit cards, passports, etc. in them, but that they will not need to be left in an insured place in the hotel or in the place of residence.
*The bag, in which valuable items are found, is preferable to be placed in such a way that there is constant visual contact with it.

Vehicle owners

Do not leave the vehicle unattended when its engine is on or leave exposed and prominently exposed to valuables, bags, wallets or other items that may cause thieves. thus attracting attention and causing malicious damage to the vehicle. In fact, property is targeted against would-be thieves.

*If you need to leave items in the car, they should be placed under the seats or in the luggage compartment. Bags, briefcases, mobile phones, portable computers or any other items in visible places inside the car, even if it is locked, should never be left.
*Do not leave his vehicle running even if he will be away even for a very short period of time and never leave the keys in the engine or door. The owner/driver should take seriously, that the deft lurk and therefore, even in the event of a short removal from his car, take all those measures that would prevent the theft of property from his vehicle or even the theft of the vehicle itself.
*Always lock the doors and fully raise the windows, even if the car is parked in front of his house or somewhere else he considers safe.
*Always park his vehicle in places where there is enough road lighting. Dark or outlying spots make the work of thieves easier.
*Make sure he has removed his car keys.
*Do not leave the keys of his vehicle exposed to prominent places or places that anyone can access.
*Ensure the safe storage of the keys of his vehicle, especially when located in crowded areas (shops, restaurants, beaches, etc.) where there is a possibility that they may become the subject of theft.
*Where there is a garage to be used.
Finally, it is recommended to install an alarm system in the car.

In general, the public is encouraged to be vigilant and to cooperate closely with the Police. If anything suspicious or any other information that may assist the work of the Police comes to the attention of the Police, inform the nearest Police Station or contact the Citizen's Contact Line on 1460.
