A very limited number of counterfeit notes with a nominal value of €500 have been detected in recent times and the Police, in cooperation with the Central Bank of Cyprus, calls on the public to be particularly careful in their transactions.
Although the number of counterfeit notes detected is very small and the Police monitor the situation, the public is called upon to check carefully the notes it receives during its daily transactions in cash, especially those of large denominations.
On the website of the Central Bank of Cyprus and the European Central Bank, there is information on simple checks to verify the authenticity of euro banknotes.
1 Feel - Special printing processes give banknotes their unique feel.
2 Look - Look at the banknote against the light. The portrait window and watermark as well as the security thread become visible.
3 Tilt - Tilt the banknote. The silvery stripe reveals a portrait of Europa in a transparent window and the emerald number displays an effect of the light that moves up and down.
4 Special features - The additional security features of the banknote need to be checked with special devices.
