The Municipality of Geroskipou has secured pre-approval for its participation as a full member and certified city in the World Health Organization in the European network "Healthy Cities", according to Mayor Michalis Pavlidis.
To this end, a presentation was held at the Municipal Palace of Geroskipou in the presence of the coordinator of healthy cities of the Hellenic Network and a representative of the World Health Organization, Mr. Dezis Papathanasopoulou, who analysed the benefits that will result from the participation of the Municipality in the Network of Healthy Cities.
"Europe's network of healthy cities has existed since 1988," said Mayor of Geroskipou. "It has 100 certified municipalities every five years that apply the principles, values and payrolls of healthy cities and there is a second network involving 32 national nets from States of the European region.
Cyprus has acquired the national network and we are already in the 7th phase where with the new five years will be the recertification and redefinition of policies and conditions".
The presentation, stressed by Michalis Pavlidis, concerned what it means to join the European network of healthy cities, what the prerequisite criteria will be and what the benefits for its citizens and the development of the city will be.
The benefits, he said, will be seen directly because it is about policy change and the projects that will take place within the city.
"A great benefit will come from the international visibility of the Municipality of Geroskipou which is now part of a very large family of 1500 cities in Europe and this is particularly important, not only at diplomatic level but also in terms of exchange of knowledge, information and know-how," said Mr Pavlidis.
Mrs Papathanasopoulou, for her part, said that Geroskipou would have access to a large database and be able to work with various cities across Europe, participate in the submission of programmes and funding to the EU and be able to easily find partners to submit these programmes.
