New questions about the next phase of the vaccination programme in Europe raise a bomb report in La Stampa newspaper.
Citing a source in the Italian health ministry, the Italian newspaper says the European Commission has decided not to renew COVID-19 vaccine contracts next year with companies such as British-Swedish AstraZeneca and American Johnson & Johnson.
"The European Commission, in agreement with leaders of several (EU) countries, has decided that contracts with companies producing viral vector vaccines, which are valid for this year, will not be renewed after they expire," the report says, as cited by Reuters.
It should be noted that the same technology is based on the manufacture of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine.
The Italian newspaper points out that Brussels would prefer to focus on mRNA vaccines, such as those of Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna.
It is recalled that, according to statements by an unnamed EU official to Reuters, the European Commission has since yesterday requested clarification from Johnson & Johnson about the company's "completely unexpected" announcement of delays in its delivery of vaccines to the EU, following the recording of six serious cases of post-administration thrombosis in the US and the suspension of its use by the relevant US health authorities.
