Despite the stabilisation one, two weeks ago of the number of cases, in recent days there has been a gradual increase in the number to an extent that is worrying, because certainly sooner or later with such numbers will increase and the number of hospitalizations and admissions to intensive care units, the member of the Advisory Scientific Committee, Professor of Microbiology/Molecular Iology of the Medical School of the University of Nicosia Dr. Petros Karagiannis, was asked about the increase, observed in the number of cases and hospitalizations.
"It seems that at the moment the numbers that are in the Intensive Care Units and those in hospital have increased to the highest number we have had so far. And that's the result of the cases we had about ten days ago. Therefore, from the time we climbed above 500, this will translate in a few days, 7 to 10 days, into an increased number of hospitalizations, so you realize, we may exceed 300 hospitalizations. Intensive Care Units will reach their limits,' he added.
In response to a question as to the reason for this increase, Mr Karagiannis said that despite "the requests and prompts to all of us to be careful in our gatherings, in the workplace, to implement self-protection measures, to observe protocols, we stressed the existence of the mutant strain in Cyprus, which is also more contagious, however these admonitions have been ignored in recent times, resulting in the epidemiological picture we have at the moment".
"If we are not careful sooner or later it will get even worse, so instead of talking about easing measures, we will probably be forced at some stage, if things do not improve, to talk about introducing measures," he noted.
Asked if and when decisions would be taken on possible further easing in the run-up to Easter, Mr Karagiannis said the situation was so fluid that no one could say at the moment.
"I imagine in the coming week some decisions will have to be made. So we have a few more days, but to be honest I don't see the situation improving significantly. Hopefully the best thing that can be done right now is to stabilize rather than get worse and see,' he concluded.
