BRITISH MUTATION DOMINANT IN CYPRUS

 Filenews 9 April 2021

The English strain of SARS-CoV-2 virus dominates the community of Cyprus, according to the results resulting from the specialized sequencing tests carried out through the ECDC programme.

As stated in the results of laboratory analyses, in a total of 111 samples the British mutation was detected in all. These samples relate to the March period and are positive samples found in all Provinces.

The new results are typical and largely explain the increasing trend in recent days in the number of cases, since it has been scientifically proven that the British strain is more than 50% more contagious.

As recommended by the European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, to reduce the communicability caused by the mutation, states need to focus on early detection of cases through increased testing and contact tracing.

Bearing in mind that the interception of the dispersion caused by mutations can be achieved by vaccinating the population, it is understood that citizens, as a matter of priority on the basis of the Vaccination Plan, should proceed as quickly as possible to vaccinate them with the available licensed vaccines.
