THIRD WORST YEAR OF WATER INFLOW INTO DAMS

Filenews 26 March 2021 - by Andrea Demetriou

We are in the third worst year of water inflow into the dams of the last ten years, according to the Department of Water Development, and the good news is that water supplies are at fairly good levels.

Speaking to associated news, First Class Technician of the Department of Water Development, Marios Hatzikostis said that based on the data so far, this year is one of the worst in ten years in terms of water inflow to dams and the eighth worst in the last 30 years since the establishment of the Department.

However, as he pointed out, it was known from the outset that it would be a year of drought and what is reassuring is that water supplies, due to the heavy rainfall of the last two years, are at high levels.

He also noted that a pattern is usually followed over the years, explaining that we have one to two years with heavy rainfall and two to three years of drought. What we hope, as he said, is that the events of 2004-2008 will not be repeated when four consecutive years of drought forced the Government to request and bring water from Greece.

At the same time, he noted that the rains of the last few days did not help at all, since they were few and local. Regarding the mudslide as a result of the intense dust in the atmosphere in recent days, he noted that it does not affect the water quality in the dams.

According to the latest data from the Department of Water Development, the water level of dams is at 75.5% compared to 99% in the corresponding period last year.

The dams that reached 100% of their full capacity are Pomos with a capacity of 860,000 cubic meters, Kalopanagiotis with 363,000 m2 capacity, Kliros-Malounda with a capacity of 2000 m2 and Solea with 4,454 m2.

In terms of the inflow of water, while in January more than 12 million cubic meters of water were introduced into the dams, only 8 million cubic meters of water went in in February. In March, the inflow of water into the dams was quite reduced, since according to the latest measurements only 3.5 million cubic meters of water flowed.
