On 12 April, the reconstruction of the three preserved buildings of the Archdiocese, on Isokratos Street, which were demolished on the instructions of Archbishop Chrysostomos, begin.
To this end, an agreement should be signed between the municipality and the Archdiocese, and this will include the issue of the payment of a guarantee by the Archdiocese, since despite the archbishop's commitment, the guarantee is essentially in the air. This was also the reason why representatives of the municipality included in the minutes prepared (during a meeting with representatives of the Archdiocese) and provision according to which an agreement will be signed under Article 43 of the Planning Law.
In order to start work on the reconstruction of the preserved buildings, a safety and health plan must be drawn up by the contractor and the risk of the buildings that remained must be lifted. The project will be audited and approved by an official of the Municipality of Nicosia.
The site will also be cleaned and the materials used in the reconstruction will be selected. At the same time, an on-site mapping of the site will be carried out to determine what is left in terms of materials. On the basis of the fix, the architect and civil engineer will draw up the plans on the basis of which the reconstruction will be carried out.
Following the decision of the majority of the Municipal Council which excluded the suspension of the cathedral's planning permission and the appeal to the Court of Justice, the mayor of Nicosia, Konstantinos Giorgis, stated that "the opinion of the Municipal Office for the formulation and dispatch of an immediate appropriate enforcement notice to the Archdiocese (based on Articles 46.48 and 57(2) of the Planning and Spatial Planning Act), under strict terms and conditions, was considered to be the most advantageous and effective action, instead of revoking or suspending the permit and/or appeal to the Courts, as it would act immediately and without any delay".
He also said that the agreed actions had been legally interconnected, with specific timetables and failure to comply with them would trigger procedures for imposing administrative fines.
However, a representative of the contractor had told "F" that the implementation of the reconstruction would take about a year.
