POLICE WARN OF BEGGARS ENTERING HOMES

Filenews 9 February 2021 - by Dora Christodoulou

Serious dimensions are acquired in Paphos the phenomenon of begging, since in addition to the continuous action of certain individuals in central areas of the city, in recent times there are also cases of entry of these individuals into residences.

The Police issued a statement yesterday calling on citizens to be particularly careful if they see these individuals and to immediately call the authorities to prevent unpleasant surprises to unsuspecting residents.

The warning comes after a case in which a woman, who had been repeatedly spotted begging outside supermarkets, bakeries and fruit shops on Greece Avenue, was spotted inside a residence. In fact, according to the Police, the owner of the house was in her bed for a midday rest when she was appalled to see the unknown woman above her, who then fled when the owner of the house started calling for help.

The same woman is alleged to have been arrested once by the Police and fined €85, but has not complied.

The Police are appealing to citizens to be cautious about begging. It also calls on citizens to be wary of approaches from unknown persons and not to observe an attitude of blind trust towards anyone who is unknown. The criminals, warn the Paphos Police, often choose to visit residences where elderly persons or persons in need of assistance reside, either for the sale of items or by asking for financial assistance with similar false pretences.
