The Ministry of Health announces that today, 26 December 2020, two more people have died from COVID-19 disease, bringing the total number of deaths to 111.
The two people who died, with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19, concern:
- Man, aged 87, with underlying diseases, who was being treated at Limassol General Hospital.
- Man, aged 73, with underlying diseases, who was being treated at Famagusta General Hospital.
Therefore, the total number of deaths, with the final cause of COVID-19, amounts to 111, of which:
- 72 men (65%), and
- 39 women (35%).
The average age of the deceased from the disease is 79 years.
It is also noted that:
- 149 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, 45 of whom are in serious condition.
- A total of 3,866 disease detection tests have been carried out, of which 536 have been carried out using the molecular method (PCR) and 3,330 using the rapid test.
- 25 new cases of the disease were identified and confirmed by molecular tests (PCR), bringing the total number of cases to 19,391.
- In 208 cases from the rapid antigen detection tests there was a positive result, which should be verified by the molecular method (PCR).
In-patients:
Hospitalized: In total, 149 patients with COVID-19 disease are hospitalized, 45 of whom are in serious condition.
Of the 45 patients critical, 20 are intubated, three are hospitalized in the Off-Respirator Intensive Care Unit and 22 in the Increased Care Unit.
Molecular Examination (PCR test): Of the 536 laboratory diagnoses carried out today by the Molecular Method (PCR), 25 cases of COVID-19 disease were identified and verified, resulting as follows:
- 16 cases from 257 samples taken through a private initiative.
- 8 cases from 114 samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
- 1 case of 150 samples taken as part of a passenger check at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
In addition, the following laboratory tests were carried out, without the detection of a case:
- 15 samples taken from the residents of Kato Pyrgos, Tylliria.
Antigen rapid test: Of the 3,330 tests carried out using the rapid test, 208 positive results were obtained.
These 208 cases will be examined using the PCR molecular method in order to be verified.

The highest rate of positivity was recorded in the free Famagusta, followed by Larnaca, then Limassol, Paphos and Nicosia, while another 8 positive results were detected in a nursing home in Larnaca.
