AVAKAS GORGE - PROBLEMATIC

 Filenews 27 December 2020

Problematic to dangerous for visitors is the tour of parts of the Avacas Gorge during this period of severe weather events and the authorities must take additional and more serious measures to improve the situation. This is what they point out in their statements to the "F" local authorities of the peninsula.

These factors stress that many visitors want to walk, but the danger of the path due to frequent rock falls, in times of bad weather, such as the one we are going through, makes the visit particularly problematic. On the subject, they pointed out, they also sent a memorandum to the Ministry of the Environment about three years ago, calling on those responsible to take measures to ensure the safety of visitors to the unique natural beauty for Cyprus gorge of Avakas on the Akamas peninsula.

In response to the memo, they said, the then Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment pointed out that the condition of the Avakas Gorge was inspected by a team of competent officials of the Department of Geological Survey and the Department of Forests, in particular in relation to the stability of its land.

"From this inspection", stressed Mr. Kougialis in his reply, "it appears that as in any other gorge with high and vertical sides, as in the gorge of Avakas, there is a risk of rock falls.

The local authorities point out that at the beginning of this year, before the pandemic occurred, some improvement projects had been carried out by the competent services, which nevertheless described as "smears" and called for a total and planning-based improvement by experts.
