Filenews 7 December 2020 - by Marilena Panagi
With this week's data causing a great deal of anxiety for the follow-up, the Ministry of Health and scientists are starting to evaluate the epidemiological data today in order to prepare their recommendations, which will probably be put before the Cabinet at the end of the week.
Yesterday ended with two more deaths of elderly people and 270 new cases, which resulted in just 2,090 laboratory tests, meaning that one in eight samples tested tested positive for the virus. 202 positive results were also announced from rapid antigen detection tests, with 70 of them coming from 1,117 tests carried out in larnaca province.
Last week's data causes great concern. 13 deaths were recorded, bringing the total number of deaths with the final cause of coronavirus to 61, while from Sunday 29 November until yesterday the Ministry of Health announced 2,220 confirmed cases.
As of today, the Ministry of Health will begin analysing the data recorded in the previous days, and it is not excluded, even today, that members of the Advisory Committee have a re-meeting with the Minister of Health in order to make an initial assessment of the situation.
The government's task, as difficult as ever, since the epidemiological data do not even stabilise the situation and on the scale, apart from the pandemic and the economy, is now entering the festive season.
In any case, however, the Government must take its decisions before the end of the week, since the decree now in force expires on 13 December and if the results of the past week are taken into account, the Council of Ministers, which is expected to meet on Friday, will probably have to revise its previous decisions, which provided for a partial relaxation of the measures from the 14th of the month.
Of course, the situation is fluid, since scientists will probably ask for more time to finalise their contributions, as since the entry into force of the existing restrictions and prohibitions only one week has passed and the Government will therefore prefer to spend a few more days in order to determine whether the measures implemented on a cyprus basis have given any positive results.
The main scenarios are three:
- Implementation of government decisions and relaxation of measures from 14 December
- Extension of the existing decree for a few more days
- Tightening of measures
The focus, of course, is on the days of Christmas and New Year, for which the Government has announced additional relaxes ten days ago, subject to the reassessment of the situation.
