TRAINED FOR BLACK BOXES IN VEHICLES

Filenews 18 November 2020 - by Michalis Hatzivasilis

Training for "black boxes" of vehicles has recently been passed by members of the Traffic Department to be ready to implement the new EU regulations once they come into force.

The first training in the Crash Data Retrieval system with co-organizers EUDARTS and Traffic took place between the dates 4 to 7 March 2020 in Cyprus. The training was carried out by foreign experts on the subject, the Dutchman Jeroen Van Essen and the Greek Dimitris Margaritis.

This system consists of an electronic program and specialized equipment that has the ability to communicate with the electronic system and vehicle control units and to download and store useful information in cases where a vehicle has been involved in a traffic collision.

According to the Assistant Director of Traffic, Haris Euripides, at this stage it is not possible to connect the system to all vehicles in circulation in our country, but with the implementation of a new European vehicle requirements type-approval directive, which will come into force soon, it will be mandatory for all new vehicles to install Event Data Recorders and thus allow universal connection. As he pointed out in 'F', there are now several techniques that can be used and important elements recovered, which with proper processing can help to investigate traffic collision cases.

The aim of the programme was for the trainees to acquire the necessary knowledge and techniques so that they could download, analyse traffic collision data, identify critical information, recognise the reliability and accuracy of this information and use the data in the investigation and representation of traffic collisions.

All members of the Police who attended the training were referred to relevant examinations in which they passed and are now considered authorised technicians and analysts of the Traffic Collision Information Recovery System (CDR).
