PROBLEM WITH A SECOND SLAUGHTERHOUSE DUE TO CORONAVIRUS

Filenews 14 November 2020 - by Michalis Hatzivasilis

A serious issue with a second slaughterhouse arose yesterday after three cases were detected among its staff, as well as the company's refusal to allow the epidemiological unit to enter for inspection.

The case was reported to the police and according to a senior official, a case against the company and its director will be investigated. The competent services of the Ministry of Health were mobilised after the outbreaks detected at the Cypra slaughterhouse.

Three cases were detected at the second slaughterhouse. This finding was red-carded by the competent departments of the Ministry of Health, who contacted the slaughterhouse manager directly and were asked to examine his staff. It appears that the company did not undertake to examine its staff on a private initiative, which is why a list of its staff was requested.

He was sent and on the basis of a regulation allowing the director of Health and Public Health Services, or her representative to examine the persons in the operation,  and yesterday members of the ambulance service accompanied by members of the Police, went to the slaughterhouse to carry out checks on the workers. However, according to the complaint of the Ministry of Health to the Police, they were not allowed entry on the supporting document that they had all been examined. On the company side it was claimed that two of the three found positive are not employees but went on to be hired.

As the Health Services have no evidence that all of the company's staff were actually examined, the Police Department was asked to examine whether any legislation was violated.

According to information provided by the "F", yesterday there was communication with the epidemiological unit of the Ministry of Health with the Police and an investigation has already been launched into whether the obstruction to carry out a Covid-19 check on the workers of the slaughterhouse constitutes a criminal offence.
