COVID-19 DEATHS INCREASE IN MANY COUNTRIES

Many countries around the world are mourning more and more deaths due to COVID-19, while cases continue to rise.

The number of SARS-CoV-2 cases in Colombia increased by 8,685 in the previous 24 hours to reach 1,182,697, the Latin American country's health ministry announced. At the same time, 178 patients succumbed to COVID-19, with the death toll of the coronavirus pandemic in the Andean state reaching 33,669 deaths since 6 March, when the first infection was confirmed.

The Brazilian Ministry of Health announced yesterday Friday that in the previous 24 hours 29,070 new confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 were recorded, while in the same period another 456 patients succumbed due to COVID-19. The death toll from the coronavirus pandemic in Latin America's largest country has reached this stage of 164,737 deaths out of a total of 5,810,652 people infected, according to ministry data.

This is respectively the second heaviest account of the pandemic in the world, behind that of the USA, and the third highest number of coronavirus infections on the planet, behind those recorded by the US and India.

The number of confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 in Germany increased by 22,461 in the previous 24 hours to reach 775,556, according to data collected by the Robert Koch Institute for Infectious Diseases. In the same period, a further 178 patients succumbed to COVID-19, with the account of the coronavirus pandemic in the country reaching this stage of 12,378 deaths, according to the same source.

The Korean Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) announced today that by midnight yesterday Friday the confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 increased by 205. It is the first time that coronavirus infections have exceeded the limit of two hundred since September. In terms of case distribution, 166 were due to local transmission, while 39 were detected among travellers arriving on South Korean territory from abroad. More than 65% of the cases are in the capital Seoul and the densely populated Kyongi province, which surrounds it.

Four other patients succumbed yesterday because of COVID-19, according to KDCA. The death toll from the coronavirus pandemic in the east Asian country has reached 492 deaths out of a total of 28,338 infections, according to official data. South Korean authorities yesterday began imposing fines of up to 100,000 won (about 76 euros), while the managers of these venues face much heavier fines of up to 3 million won (2,286 euros).

President Moon Jae-in's government is negotiating with pharmaceutical companies to buy millions of doses of candidates for anti-coronavirus vaccines. Its aim is to vaccinate as soon as possible, possibly even later this year, 60% of south Korea's population.

Mexico's Ministry of Health announced yesterday Friday that 5,558 cases of SARS-CoV-2 had been confirmed in the previous 24 hours, while 568 patients succumbed due to COVID-19. The official record of the victims of the coronavirus pandemic in the country reached this stage 97,624 dead out of a total of 997,393 infections. But Mexican government officials acknowledge that the number of people infected with the virus is actually much higher than that of confirmed cases, and at the end of October, the health ministry estimated that the victims of the pandemic are probably many more in fact, perhaps even 50,000 more, than the officially registered ones.

The number of SARS-CoV-2 cases in Ghana has increased by 61 in the past 24 hours to a total of 50,018, the west African country's health service has announced. Covid-19 deaths amount to 320 so far, according to the same source. The number of so-called active cases rose to 1,519, down from 300 in October.

President Nana Akufo-Ando expressed "concern" about the resurgence of the spread in Ghana "given what is happening in Europe and America", which are "affected by the second wave" of the pandemic.

China's Ministry of Health announced today that by midnight yesterday Friday it was informed of 18 new confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 in mainland China, up from eight the previous day. The ministry clarified that all cases were "imported," meaning they were detected among travelers after arriving on Chinese territory from abroad. The number of asymptomatic carriers decreased to 10, from 15 the previous day. These were "imported" cases, according to the same source. 24 patients were deemed to have been treated and discharged from hospitals. Another 388 are being treated, three in serious condition. Officially, the account of the coronavirus pandemic in China stands at 4,634 dead due to COVID-19 out of a total of 86,325 infections from SARS-CoV-2.
