WHERE IS THE OCCUPANCY OF THE DAMS - THE HIGHEST INFLOWS OF THE DECADE

WHERE IS THE OCCUPANCY OF THE DAMS - THE HIGHEST INFLOWS OF THE DECADE - Filenews 8/10

The rainfall recorded so far for the month of October is proving to be particularly beneficial for the dams as well, as it maintains the level of occupancy at approximately the same levels as the levels of September of the year, although slightly below the levels of August as a result of the heavy rainfall with which the summer month ended. According to today's data from the Water Development Department, the total occupancy of Cypriot dams amounts to 35.6% of their total capacity (103,386 ECM) compared to 11.9% (34,703 ECM) in the corresponding period last year, recording a significant improvement compared to the picture presented in October 2025.

Despite the significant increase in stocks compared to last year, the stored quantities of water remain significantly lower than the levels recorded three and four years ago. Specifically, the stored amount of water currently amounts to 103.386 million cubic meters, compared to 34.703 million cubic meters on the corresponding day last year, showing an increase of 68.683 million cubic meters.

Occupancy per dam

In relation to the occupancy per dam, the highest is found in the Kalopanagiotis dam, with 100% occupancy, followed by the Xyliatos dam with 75.2% and Vyzakia with 72%. At 61.6% is the occupancy for the dam of Arminou, Pomos with 60.5%, Germasogeia with 48.3%, Agia Marina with 47.7%, Argaka with 43.5%, Polemidia with 43.1% and Kannaviou with 42.4%. Lower occupancy rates are recorded in Evretou with 38.8%, in Asprokremmos with 35.7%, in Mavrokolympos with 29.7%, in Dipotamos with 25.1%, in Kalavasos with 21.8% and in Lefkara with 17.3%, while the lowest occupancy is presented by the Achna dam with only 8.3%.

In Kouris, the largest dam with a capacity of 115 million cubic meters, the occupancy today amounts to 36.9% and 42.467 million cubic meters, compared to 12.581 million cubic meters and an occupancy of 10.9% in the corresponding period last year. Despite the significant increase compared to last year, the reserves in the dam remain lower than the levels of October 2022, when they exceeded 76 million cubic meters.

The highest inflows of the decade

Referring to the data of previous years of the Water Development Department, significant fluctuations in water inflows to dams over the last decade are found, with the largest inflows occurring during the hydrological year 2018-2019, where they had amounted to 265.04 million cubic meters, followed by the years 2021-2022 with 153.75 million cubic meters and 2019-2020 with 135.95 million cubic meters. In contrast, the lowest inflows of the decade were recorded in 2024-2025, with just 18,664 million cubic meters, and in 2023-2024, with 24,714 million cubic meters. A significant recovery occurred during the hydrological year 2025-2026, with total inputs reaching 117.091 million cubic meters.

In relation to water reserves, a significant decrease is recorded with 2025 being the year with the lowest performance. Specifically, in October 2022 the total amount of water stored in the dams amounted to 216.229 million cubic meters, while in October 2023 it decreased to 155.93 million cubic meters. This was followed by a further decrease in October 2024, with inventories falling to 88.607 million cubic meters, and in October 2025 to 39.721 million cubic meters.

A similar course is recorded in the largest dam in Cyprus, Kouri, where the amount of water decreased from about 77 million cubic meters in October 2022 to about 53 million in October 2023 and 29-30 million in October 2024, and to 12-13 million cubic meters in October 2025. It is noted that this year, stocks in Kouris show a significant recovery, reaching 42.467 million cubic meters, however they remain significantly below the levels of 2022 and 2023.
