In contrast to yesterday's lukewarm position on the electricity interconnection between Cyprus and Greece, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was much clearer in what he said about the electrical interconnection to Alexis Papachelas and Kathimerini Greece, in an interview.
Mr. Rubio was clear: The United States supports a new energy architecture in the region, including the Vertical Corridor (for transporting American LNG through Greece to Balkan and other European markets) and the GSI (Crete, Cyprus, Israel) electrical interconnection. He explained that for the United States it is very important to ensure that there are alternative options in energy supply chains.
Perhaps the most important reference of Mr. Rubios to Alexis Papachelas regarding the GSI was the following: We intend to take diplomatic initiatives to remind all parties involved how important this issue is to us and I hope that we will find solutions. He reiterated that these issues are not beneficial to be resolved through the media. They must be resolved, he said, discreetly, through diplomatic channels.
In the same interview with Kathimerini Greece, Mr. Rubio said that it would be unthinkable for the US to have a deterioration in relations between Greece and Turkey or a serious crisis in the Aegean or Cyprus, something that his country would not allow, as he said.
