In an urgent letter yesterday to the Deputy Minister of Tourism Costas Koumis, the presidents of STEK, PASYXE and OEB request the investigation of the possibility of organizing the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) race in Cyprus, which was scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabia between November 12 – 15, 2026, but was cancelled due to the unstable situation in the region.
Through the letter, Akis Vavlitis, Giannos Pantazis and Giorgos Pantelides suggest that the possibility of taking an initiative for the organization of this race in Cyprus be examined, highlighting the fact that our country is a safe and reliable destination and has the conditions to host international sports events of this level.
The race is organized by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and the World Rally Championship (WRC). The WRC is one of the most important international motorsport events, with great impact and international visibility.
As pointed out in the letter, "Cyprus is not called upon to start from scratch, having successfully hosted WRC races in the past. The experience and relevant know-how that have been acquired are an important basis for attracting the event. The organization of a race in Cyprus can act as a means of attracting an additional number of visitors from abroad, with direct and indirect benefits for the wider tourism industry, catering, transport and other related economic activities."
It is also pointed out that the possibility of taking advantage of such an event outside the peak tourist season (November) is of particular importance. "The strengthening of tourist traffic during the months of lower demand", say STEK, PASYXE, OEB, is a constant demand for the tourism sector. Attracting an event of the scope of the WRC can contribute in this direction, enhancing occupancy rates and supporting the effort to extend the tourist season."
In addition to the direct attraction of visitors, the benefit from the international promotion of Cyprus through the television and digital coverage of the event is also important. This promotion can be used to promote Cyprus as a tourist destination, but also as a country capable of safely and successfully hosting major international events.
In conclusion, "the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, in cooperation with the co-competent state and other involved bodies, (to) investigate as soon as possible the conditions and possibilities of organizing a WRC race in Cyprus, as well as the possibility of relevant communication with the FIA and the WRC Promoter. (…) PASYXE, STEK and OEB remain at your disposal to contribute to any relevant initiative deemed appropriate to be undertaken."
