The Defence Ministers of the three countries agreed to further deepen the defence cooperation between Cyprus, Greece and Egypt during the 6th Trilateral Meeting, which took place on Monday in Cairo.
The Republic of Cyprus was represented by the Minister of Defence Vassilis Palmas, with the three sides reaffirming their will to strengthen cooperation with the aim of safeguarding regional security and stability.
According to the Ministry of Defense, cooperation is based on respect for the United Nations Charter, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), as well as the relevant agreements and rules of International Law.
The three Ministers exchanged views on international and regional developments and security challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean, while examining the impact of ongoing crises on the security and stability of the wider region.
Particular reference was made to the need to de-escalate tensions and end armed conflicts. Cyprus, Greece and Egypt also reaffirmed their commitment to constructive dialogue as a key instrument for the peaceful resolution of disputes.
A significant part of the discussion focused on the operational dimension of trilateral cooperation.
The three sides emphasized:
carrying out joint military exercises and training,
further enhance interoperability;
the exchange of know-how between the armed forces;
strengthening cooperation on maritime security;
search and rescue,
in cyber defence,
and the protection of critical infrastructure.
Ministers agreed to maintain the momentum of trilateral defence cooperation, with the aim of further strengthening security, resilience and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and the wider region.
At the end of the meeting, the Ministers of Defence of the three countries signed a Joint Statement, confirming the framework and directions of their cooperation.
