Cyprus is establishing itself as a reliable partner in the fields of space innovation, according to the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Nicodemus Damianou.
Asked about the recent Cyprus-France Cooperation in the field of Space, and the Joint Declaration on cooperation in the field of space activities signed by the two countries, the Deputy Minister initially mentioned that our ability to understand climate change, respond to natural disasters, enhance our connectivity and industrial capabilities, protect critical infrastructure and support innovation, as well as our defense capabilities, our technological dominance and our strategic autonomy, are increasingly dependent on space.
He noted that the discussions that took place and the declarations adopted during the International Space Summit last week in Paris reflect this common European understanding.
"In recent years, Cyprus has substantially evolved from the role of a user of space services to that of an emerging player in the European space ecosystem," he stressed.
He said that through our active participation in European space programs, cooperation with the European Space Agency as an Associated Member, strategic investments in terrestrial satellite infrastructure, facilities and secure connectivity, and innovation-focused initiatives, such as the creation of the specialized Space Business Inbucation Centre, Cyprus is establishing itself as a reliable partner in the fields of space innovation, Earth observation and services utilizing space technologies, in an area of particular strategic importance.
Noting that international cooperation is at the core of our approach, but also of the purpose of the Summit itself, he said that in this context, Cyprus and France signed, on the sidelines of the Summit, a Joint Declaration on cooperation in the field of space activities.
"The Declaration creates the framework for closer cooperation in the fields of Earth observation, space science and satellite communications," the Deputy Minister stressed.
At the same time, he added, it lays the foundations for the exchange of know-how and experience, the encouragement of participation in joint research and industrial initiatives, as well as the strengthening of our coordination within the European Space Agency and other European and international organizations and forums.
"The long-standing relationship between Cyprus and France continues to deepen in strategic areas. Building on the Strategic Partnership established by Presidents Christodoulides and Macron, this signing reflects our common political will to work together for a stronger, more resilient and more autonomous Europe," the Deputy Minister concluded.
