The circumstances under which the new fatal accident occurred on the Limassol-Paphos highway, with the victim being a 76-year-old Greek Cypriot, who got out of his double-cabin vehicle to move a refrigerator that had fallen on the road and was swept away by a passing minibus, are shocking. The bus driver was arrested in connection with the case, while the circumstances of the accident are being investigated by the authorities.
At a point after the tunnel and before the exit to Paramali, under circumstances that are being investigated, a refrigerator that they were transporting fell from the bed of the double-cabin vehicle. The driver moved backwards in order to return to the place where the refrigerator had fallen. He then got out of the vehicle in order to move it off the road. At that moment, however, he was swept away by a passing minibus.
As Filenews is informed, the double-cab vehicle was temporarily immobilized on the highway, as a result of which the driver of the minibus crashed into it and then dragged the 76-year-old. The unfortunate man was fatally injured, while his grandson, who was with him in the vehicle, came out unharmed.
According to the same information, the driver of the minibus was arrested, while he underwent an alcohol and drug test. His statement is expected to be taken, as well as statements from the other persons who were in the vehicle, as part of the investigation.
The minibus was carrying passengers to Paphos Airport.
It is noted that the area falls under the jurisdiction of the British Bases. Members of the Limassol Traffic Police rushed to the scene to provide assistance and regulate traffic.
The circumstances under which the fatal incident occurred are being investigated by the British Bases Police, in collaboration with members of the Bases' traffic accident investigation team. As reported to us by the British Bases, the relatives of the victim have been informed about the tragic incident.
The presence and action of the Police last night was intense, throughout Cyprus, with organized patrols in key points of urban areas, with the aim of preventing serious criminal acts, ensuring public order and increasing the sense of security of the public.
As a result of the preventive policing operations, ten persons were arrested for various offenses, such as burglary of a building, theft, assault, illegal stay on the territory of the Republic, traffic violations, as well as for pending court fine warrants.
As part of these operations, during the night, 497 vehicles were stopped for inspection and 639 persons on board were checked. At the same time, 48 inspections of premises were carried out, with the aim of dealing with phenomena of delinquency, from which five complaints emerged.
During traffic checks carried out, 366 complaints were made, concerning various traffic violations, while twelve investigated cases of traffic violations also emerged. As part of the police examinations, eight vehicles were detained.
Of the complaints made about traffic violations, 109 complaints concerned exceeding the speed limit. Seven complaints were made of driving under the influence of alcohol, while three cases of driving under the influence of drugs emerged, after preliminary drug tests. For driving under the influence of alcohol, 131 vehicle driver checks were carried out, while for driving under the influence of drugs, five driver checks were carried out.
Policing operations, for the prevention and suppression of crime, continue every day, with an enhanced police presence, targeted controls and immediate operational action, in order to protect citizens and ensure public order.

Officials of the Customs Department at Larnaca Airport, after evaluating information, located a 57-year-old Turkish Cypriot passenger, before his departure for the United Kingdom, with his luggage containing large quantities of cigarettes, the packaging of which did not bear the marking for the harmful of smoking in the Greek and Turkish languages, nor the safety feature and the unique traceability code, indications that they were duty-free.
Specifically, a total of 70 boxes of 200 cigarettes each were found in the passenger's luggage. The passenger was arrested for flagrante delicto, while the luggage and its contents were confiscated. He was later released, after his request for an out-of-court settlement of the case with payment of €4,200 was accepted. The seized cigarettes will follow the prescribed destruction procedure.

The Fire Service was mobilized in the early hours of the morning, after a fire broke out in an abandoned three-storey building in Strovolos.
According to the Fire Service, at 02:09 a call was received for a fire in piles of waste materials on the ground floor and first floor of a three-storey abandoned building in Strovolos, in the province of Nicosia.
The Acropolis Fire Station responded and the fire was brought under control at 02:43.
The fire was caused by malicious action by unknown persons.

The TAE Larnaca proceeded to arrest four more persons in connection with the incidents caused during the fan conference of Nea Salamina.
They are, according to the Police, a 27-year-old Greek Cypriot as well as three minors, also Greek Cypriots, aged 17, 15 and 14.
The number of arrests so far has amounted to 12 persons.
Two arrest warrants were also issued against two more Greek Cypriots aged 23 and 16, who are wanted.
The arrested are expected to appear before a court tomorrow to request detention.
The examinations to locate the remaining wanted persons and to identify the remaining 18 suspects continue.

The Police in Limassol were mobilized, after an incident of chase of a white van, the driver of which allegedly refused to stop for a check.
According to the information, around 10:40 in the morning, on Athinon Street in Limassol, a member of the Bicycle Policing called a vehicle driver to stop for a check. The driver, however, reportedly continued on his way, with the police officer following him and at the same time asking for reinforcements from other patrols.
In his attempt to escape, the driver allegedly moved towards the area of the Ypsonas Industrial Area, while on the way he seems to have crashed his vehicle into two parked cars.
According to the same information, during the chase, the occupants allegedly threw objects at the police patrols.
Several members of the Police participated in the operation, while, according to the information, warning shots were fired in the direction of the tires and in the air, in order to immobilize the vehicle.
The vehicle was finally stopped and stopped at the traffic lights of Eleftherios in Kato Polemidia.
Two persons, aged 20 and 19, both Turkish Cypriots, were arrested from the vehicle. The 20-year-old is said to be known to the authorities, as, according to the information, he had been involved in a similar incident about a month earlier.
The driver was arrested for flagrante delicto, while the second person, who was in the vehicle as a passenger, is being checked.
The circumstances under which the incident occurred, as well as the exact offenses being investigated, are being examined by the Police.

An alarm was sounded by the Police, as the body of an unknown person was found.
In a relevant announcement, it is stated that around 9:30 a.m. today, the body of an unknown person was found, at the location "Kallinikos" within the Paphos State Forest, by officials of the Department of Forests.
Members of the Police went to the scene, while a medical examiner was called for an autopsy. The legal procedures for the identification of the body will be followed.
Arrests continue by the TAE Larnaca in connection with the attack with bats on the auxiliary fields of Nea Salamina late on the night of August 22, which resulted in the injury of three young people. So far, a total of 13 people have been arrested, including minors, 6 are wanted, while efforts are being made to identify another 12.
These are fans of AEK Larnaca, who allegedly stormed the auxiliary stadiums of "Famagusta-Epistrosti" and beat young people who were in the area with bats, after the end of the fun day of Nea Salamina fans.
The 5 young arrested, Greek Cypriots aged 14, 15, 17, 22 and 27, were brought before the Larnaca District Court today, which ordered their five-day detention. For a total of 13 arrested, an application was filed for the issuance of a decree exclusion from sports competitions in accordance with the relevant legislation.

An alarm has been sounded by the authorities after a burglary of a kiosk in Limassol, which took place today in the early hours of the morning, with the perpetrator breaking into the store and grabbing an OTERO machine, which then broke in order to take away the money.
According to information from the Police, this is the second similar incident at a kiosk, which is recorded in Limassol, with the authorities investigating whether the same person is behind the two cases.
The burglary occurred between 5:00 and 5:30 in the morning, at a kiosk on Misiaouli and Kavazoglou Street in Limassol. According to a relevant post on social media, the perpetrator allegedly used a wheel (flex) to break the door and enter the kiosk.
Subsequently, he allegedly snatched the OTERO machine, which is used to manage and process mobile data and transactions. Then, according to the same post, he broke the machine in order to remove the money and abandoned it on Makarios Avenue.
At the same time, there is information that is being investigated that the same person tried to steal a similar machine from other kiosks or points in the area during the same night.
The post also refers to a feature of the alleged perpetrator, who allegedly has a tattoo on his left arm. It is also estimated that he may have parked his vehicle on a road behind the kiosk.
Authorities are examining closed surveillance circuits from the area, in an effort to secure images that may lead to the identification of the perpetrator and shed light on his movements before and after the burglary.
