Over 2,100 couples in Cyprus divorced in 2024, a number that corresponds to almost six separations per day. Other marriages lasted just a few months, while hundreds ended after more than 20 years together. The data also show large differences between provinces, but also a significant number of divorces in families with children.
According to the data of the Statistical Service, in total, 2,107 divorces were recorded in 2024, compared to 2,134 in 2023. The decrease was small, just 27 cases, with the total number remaining above 2,000 for the second year in a row.
In 2022, 1,503 divorces were recorded, while a year later the number rose to 2,134. The year with the most divorces remains 2019, when a total of 2,308 were recorded.
In 2024, there were 2.16 divorces per 1,000 inhabitants.
The data by province
The most divorces were recorded in Nicosia, where in 2024 they reached 794. A year ago it was 891.
Limassol was in second place with 575 divorces, up from 555 in 2023.
Larnaca followed with 397, compared to 376 in 2023, while in Paphos divorces increased from 217 to 250.
In the free province of Famagusta, 91 were recorded, four fewer than the previous year.
Nicosia is consistently in first place, which is also linked to the fact that it is the largest province in terms of population.
33 divorces before one year of marriage
Of particular interest are the data on the duration of the marriage. In 33 cases, the divorce was issued before the first year was completed. In the four years of marriage, 130 divorces were recorded and in the five years 143 were recorded.
Separations are not limited to the early years of marriage. A total of 359 couples divorced after 10 to 14 years of marriage, while another 299 divorced after 15 to 19 years.
The largest category was marriages lasting 20 years or more, with 484 divorces.
The average length of marriages that ended in divorce in 2024 was 13.2 years.
Almost half without dependent children
Of the 2024 divorces, 1,047 involved couples without a dependent child. In 541 cases there was one child and in 397 two.
The more the number of children increases, the smaller the number of divorces recorded. Specifically, 72 divorces involved couples with three dependent children, 18 with four and just three with five or more. Of course, families with more children are also fewer in the general population.
In total, 1,638 dependent children were linked to divorces issued in 2024. Most, 537, were aged between 5 and 9 years.
Mainly among Cypriots
Most divorces in 2024 involved couples where both spouses were Cypriots. In total, 1,167 such cases were recorded.
There were also divorces between Cypriots and people of other nationalities, including those from Greece, Russia and Ukraine.
In the case of Greek men, 61 divorces involved marriage to a Cypriot woman, while in another 46 cases both spouses were from Greece.
